13.04.2016 : IT trends 2016
What can we expect in the world of IT during the next year? As the very first Gartner published a forecast, followed by market researcher Forrester. A general overview:
Both IT analysts describe strategic trends that will require significant structural changes in the company and organisation. Therefore the studies are not only restricted to the year 2016. Within the next three to four years the presented trends should show their full influence.
Forrester differentiates in upcoming technologies between those being perceived consciously and already accepted innovations. Gartner divides the phase of public awareness that the new technologies pass during their introduction into five parts. The “Hype Cycle” begins with “technological impulse”. It includes “exaggerated expectations” as well as “disappointments“ and ends with „understanding“ and „acceptance” of new technologies.
The most important trends
Cyber security and adaptive systems
Cyber-crime also plays an important role in IT trends. Hacker attacks will rise significantly due to the growing acceptance and use of cloud services. According to Gartner analytical methods which detect and classify irregularities in an early stage are necessary. In the ideal case security systems are adaptive, this means they respond individually to threats. In opinion of Forrester the technical part of security and the user behaviour is in focus.
Information jungle is clearing
We get information not only in text form but in audio and video format. Gartner is calling this phenomenon “Information of Everything”. The market research institute believes that the appropriate strategy should be already developed to bring the information of the different data sources together and process in a structured manner. This is the only way to decrypt the flood of information. In the opinion of Forrester data is playing an important role for the decision-making-process. That´s why data analysis applications like “Systems of Insight”, which allows you to generate specific processes, become more important.
Connectivity: everything is interconnected
Not only smartphones and tablets are connected to the internet. Smart home solutions, wearables or connected cars: the number of devices currently in use is growing constantly. According to Gartner companies should be more aware of this so-called “Device Mesh” all devices we are using for communication. This awareness is also a better cross-linking and cooperation amongst the different devices. A big problem is the different approaches of the producers: Gartner estimates that until 2018 the standardisation will remain the biggest challenge. For Forrester the internet of things (IoT) represents rather a data generator – keyword “Big Data” -, who delivers useful information l if they are analysed accordingly.
A result of the constantly growing number of interconnected devices is that the user experiences the changes between different devices more and more unobtrusive and fluid. For Gartner this development requires a greater focus when implementing new applications. The view of the end-user is already seen as important. However the concentrated use of different software solutions is to less holistic.
Artificial systems are able to learn from several use cases and use this knowledge, known as machine learning. So far this was made by human instructions, in future intelligent machines should execute independently. This effects the development of the autonomous cars or the virtual assistants, who recognize individual needs earlier. Following Gartner technology is supporting more and more to disburden people. A trend for the next years or even decades.
IT of two different speeds
For Forrester this means the dual agenda of tech management: companies have to focus on cloud computing without neglecting the traditional IT and their goals in terms of efficiency. The trend regarding network, server and storage is towards cloud and software defined infrastructure. Gartner calls this trend “Bimodale IT”.
In the software development Gartner sees a clear move away from monolithic systems. In the future the software systems will be loosely coupled together and thereby easily expandable and scalable. Application developer will be able to better integrate the advantages of cloud into their solutions.
Importance for the publish administration
A transformational change is emerging where citizens interact with the public administration: digital penetration and the growing degree of networking in all areas of life will change the communication. These trends are therefore of central significance for the BRZ and the public administration:
Interoperability and the re-use of micro functions and micro building blocks are of growing importance in a new method of software development
Perfectly coordinated cooperation between the BRZ with its costumers and partners is important because of the growing importance of the IT as ecosystem.
The main challenge will be to increase the interoperability on the basis of common standards and a better use of IT resources.
